Capital Philharmonic of New Jersey DOC_5
Branding re-design for a professional orchestra based in Trenton, NJ.
Many big professional orchestras, and well-known performing arts centers alike, have had contemporary re-brands in most recent years. I’ve really admired this direction and wanted to provide a similar treatment to a smaller orchestra, who deserve as much love as the most famous ones. I’m also a flute player, have a degree in Music & Tech, and I’ve played in many ensembles in my life. And I like the idea of making people aware of their options for live music - in an age of a Ticketmaster monopoly and predatory dynamic pricing, you can still see professional musicians for a relatively low price!
The logo is a bit abstract, but it’s a combination of the C and P (for Capital Philharmonic) with some lines that are reminiscent of a music staff. It was a tight balance of creating something unique and recognizable without it feeling corporate or overly simplistic. I also wanted to ensure everything had movement and levity. People mistakenly view the world of classical music as something out-of-reach, snobbish, and sophisticated. So it was important to make this branding feel accessible and friendly.
Below you can see find of my sketches for the logo.
As a last note, if you ever find yourself in the Princeton area, I highly recommend seeing some live music in the Richardson Auditorium. I have been both on stage and in the audience there, and it is one of the best auditory experiences as far as venues go.
